Corbin Harney with a big smile

Corbin Harney
Shundahai Network Founder

Corbin was an elder and spiritual leader from Newe Sogobia.

Corbin Harney
March 24, 1920 -
July 10, 2007

Before he passed Corbin is reported to have said, "Remember... We are one people. We cannot separate ourselves now. There are many good things to be done for our people and for the world. It is important to let things be good. And it is important to teach the younger generation so that things are not lost."

Recent Survey results regarding the future of Shundahai Network

10/24/07 Dear Shundahai Friends,

I thought I would take the opportunity to share, as well, the results of the Shundahai Network (SN) survey recently conducted by the Board to seek your guidance about Shundahai’s future. The survey was filled out by 130 of you, which should provide a good cross-section of the opinions of those who care about SN’s future.

Click here for a pdf of the Survey Results

In a nutshell, the results show that a lot of people value SN's past work and would like to see SN continue. Most responders have attended at least one SN gathering, but 40% have not. People consider direct actions to be the most important part of the gatherings. When rating the importance of SN's activities, they rated "Liaison with Native Community" highest, followed closely by "Offering Native Leadership" and "Direct Action." Looking toward the
future, "Offer Native leadership toward environmental justice" was the clear priority. Thirty-seven indicated an interest in attending a future planning meeting (see below).

The Board is in the process of planning a meeting to flesh out SN’s future, tentatively scheduled for Jan. 11-13, 2008 in Las Vegas. Please pencil this into your calendar if you are interested and able to attend. Stay tuned for more information.

Thank you for your interest in Shundahai Network.

Peter Bergel, for the SN Board.

About Corbin Harney and
Shundahai Network

Gregor Gable, longtime friend of Corbin Harney’s and Shundahai.org’s former webmaster, promised Corbin that he would compile a book to be called "The Shundahai Network: A Decade of Resistance," chronicling what we all accomplished together with Corbin over the years of resistance at the Nevada Test Site and other nuclear installations.

10/24/07 Update from Gregor:

In order to pursue the book about Corbin Harney and the Shundahai Network that I promised Corbin I would write, I need to have more materials sent in by private parties.

Almost all of the archival materials I had gathered over the years that I worked with Corbin Harney and the Shundahai Network were deleted by a former staff member. Thus, I do not have sufficient material to create the book. I need master photos (photos with at least 300 dpi) and video and audio recordings.

Also many people have promised to send me their memories of Shundahai actions. Now is the time to do so. Without more material, I am unable to complete this project, which was important to Corbin.

If you have stories, photographs, reminiscences, videos or audio records you would like to contribute to this project, please send them to:

Gregor Gable
1016 Denver St. Apt # 1
Salt Lake City, UT 84111-4773
Email: gregornot@gmail.com
Phone (cell) 510-410-6915

You will receive full credit for any materials contributed. Please print your return address clearly so that your materials can be returned, if you want them back. If you are sending a story or reminiscence, please keep a copy to save return postage.

If you have experience as an editor and are able to volunteer some time to this project, your assistance would be very welcome.

Thank you for keeping Corbin Harney's work with Shundahai Network and his memory alive. This project is a good way of doing that.

Please communicate directly with Gregor regarding this project his project.

Highlighted film: Trespassing

Over nine years in the making, "Trespassing" is a feature-length documentary film that poetically examines our fight for survival. By focusing on the battle around nuclear storage in the United States, the film carefully unpacks a deadly controversy around land rights, uranium mining, nuclear testing and the disposal of nuclear waste. The actions resulted in over 2,200 arrests, the largest number of arrests at a political protest outside Washington, D.C. in U.S. history.

Shundahai Network mission statement

_______________________________________________________________________

Shundahai Network is dedicated to breaking the nuclear chain by building alliances with indigenous communities and environmental, peace and human rights movements. We seek to abolish all nuclear weapons and an end to nuclear testing. We advocate phasing out nuclear energy and ending the transportation and dumping of nuclear waste. We promote the principles of Environmental Justice and strive to insure that indigenous voices are heard in the movement to influence U.S. Nuclear and environmental policies. All of our campaigns and events incorporate the values of community building, education, spiritual ceremonies and nonviolent direct action.

We maintain three main programs

Environmental Justice Now directly assists indigenous communities affected by nuclear issues, ensuring their voices are heard on the national level.

Nuclear Free Great Basin fights the dumping and transportation of nuclear waste in the Great Basin bio-region by linking communities, businesses and activists in a common strategy to stop the construction of nuclear waste dumps.

Action for Nuclear Abolition works for complete nuclear weapons disarmament and closure of the Nevada Test Site to all nuclear programs except for containment and clean up. To this end we organize educational gatherings and nonviolent direct actions increasing public awareness and involvement.

Shundahai Network opposes all nuclear weapons research, development, testing and production. We actively seek to close down the Nevada Test Site to all nuclear weapons programs except for radioactive contamination containment and cleanup. Shundahai Network also opposes all nuclear waste dumping on indigenous peoples lands. We are fighting to halt the proposed high-level nuclear waste dumps at Yucca Mountain and Skull Valley Reservation. We work to educate about the dangers of radioactive waste transportation and promote a safe and sane energy policy based on conservation and renewable resources. To this end, Shundahai Network organizes and participates in nonviolent direct actions, demonstrations, workshops and conferences.
